drag
February 20th, 2008 | Oddments
I just have to show you the costume I wore to the Winter is a Drag Ball the other night. The theme was the Rocky Horror Picture Show. So of course I was Brad.
The Queer Theory Professor whipped me up that plaid tie and cummerbund Saturday afternoon in a mere five hours. It was extraordinarily generous of her because she had to set aside the paper she was writing on cross-dressing in As You Like It.
Most people chose to ignore the designated theme and did their own freeform drag. However, I couldn’t persuade my girlfriend, who’s rather shy and introverted, to dress up at all. So she just went like herself.
Isn’t she something?

just speechless….
February 20th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Oh yippy! Isn’t it fun to have a girlfriend who will play dress-up AND who has a stronger inclination towards extroversion than one’s self? My new gf is similarly inclined and it’s a blast.
February 20th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
You make a wonderful Brad.
( Now I’m off to do the Timewarp… again ! )
February 20th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I can tell from that dresser that somebody has cats.
February 20th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
god theres just something about nerds that gets my heart a-pumping.
the very first time I ever made out with a girl was in the back row at Rocky Horror.
February 20th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
You make a fine Brad; but who are you dating, Pamela Anderson?
February 20th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Ssssssmokin’!
February 20th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
It’s as if some lucky poindexter freshman won a date with Pamela Anderson. You can just see your chest swelling with pride. Oh, wait…riiight.
February 20th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Shadocat! Jinx! Double jinx! King jinx!
February 20th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

February 20th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
If ever we meet, are you sure you wouldn’t want something a little more potent than a coke?
February 20th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Doctor Scott!
February 20th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Maybe a little shot of rum with it….
February 20th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

February 21st, 2008 at 12:30 am
So f-n cute. This was BOLD of you, A, posting this. Right on!
February 21st, 2008 at 1:01 am
The two of you would be right at home as witnesses in this Phoenix Wright game for the DS that I’m playing… ^_^
February 21st, 2008 at 1:03 am
Alison…
who hemmed your pants? the length is perfect.
Your girlfriend is a cutie…shame she’s no fun and wouldn’t dress up.
I see she’s a trend setter…those glasses, very avant garde!
February 21st, 2008 at 1:32 am
Mouseketeer Roll Call!
(I love the drag, deeply, and alla y’all - - but mostly that first shot, which looks like a still life for Alison to sketch. The hand drawing is the hand that cradles the rock, and rocks.)
February 21st, 2008 at 2:50 am
Who’s the Queer Theory Professor? Is that her girlfriend?
February 21st, 2008 at 4:08 am
I see baseboards!
On another, very different topic: FUN HOME / EINE FAMILIE VON GEZEICHNETEN arrived. Finished in a day. So much more… translucent than the American original.
And again, when I looked at the last page, where AB jumps, my eyes were overflowing.

February 21st, 2008 at 7:48 am
The two of you are just too cool! Shy or not, I can just picture her catching that bouquet!
February 21st, 2008 at 8:35 am
What adorable photos!
Your gal looks (in drag) like Ann-Margret, or Joanna Lumley as a Bond girl! Hahahaha!
I like the Brad drag too. Nice.
February 21st, 2008 at 8:40 am
that’s brilliant! i love.
February 21st, 2008 at 8:47 am
I wish I were Frank N. Furter so I could ravish you both!
February 21st, 2008 at 11:56 am
I have no words. *swoon*
February 21st, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Y’know, that wig is reminiscent of antlers. Headgear designed to awe and overwhelm.
Nice pose in the last pic.
February 21st, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Yeah, that first blush of lust/affection/whatever…is there a sweeter feeling in life?
In comics news, today my local paper ran an article on Lynn Johnston’s plans with “For Better or For Worse.” She’s going to wrap up all current story lines, then start from the beginning, tinkering with old strips, “aumenting” them. It sounds kind of confusing to me, but it’s her world:

way to go, AB! you know i’m a sucker for an accurately re-created film costume. you’re just missing the white boutonniere, so i hope paris was thoughtful enough to take some time from her “hottie and the nottie” publicity to make it to the florist.
February 21st, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Aaaaaaahmigawwwddd, that’s so cool!
Long-time reader, first-time commenter. As a teenage queer girl living in the Deep South, I’d just like to say that you’ve been not only a great inspiration to me, but I also LOVE your writing (I read Fun Home over and over!) and that you look so AWESOME as Brad!
February 21st, 2008 at 4:25 pm
You make an eerily good Brad, Alison.
This photo makes me particularly happy because (to be a GIANT GEEK for a moment):
When I was in high school, my friends and I used to pass your comics and Susie Bright’s books around while *planning our outfits* for the next Rocky Horror Picture Show. I also had your comics tacked up on my pale pink walls, alongside the Team Dresch and Bikini Kill posters.
Thanks for being part of the background of my very queer youth.
February 21st, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Alison, you didnt just dream it your were IT! I think I can hear your lovely lady shouting ‘toucha toucha toucha touch me!’ where I’m at!!!
February 21st, 2008 at 9:34 pm
So she’s officially your girlfriend now?
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:08 am
so the guitar…
hope you rocked the Time Warp before you left.
February 22nd, 2008 at 1:07 am
I wore a man’s suit the other day. I was told that I “clean up nice”. Seriously, Alison, you look like a male geologist. Women geologist dress so they can go out to a rock outcrop at a moment’s notice. Plaid shirts over a t-shirt, jeans and hiking boots. Doc Marten’s are the best, if you can afford them. My first visit to San Francisco, I was sitting at an open-air cafe looking at the women walking by and thinking, “There are a LOT of women geologists here in San Francisco”. Really, I did. I smiled and waived to everyone; they seemed perplexed at first, but smiled and waved back to me. I guess they could tell that I was from out of town…

Queer Theory prof? …so you’re dating Sydney???
Thanx for sharing these pix with us. Five hours to sew your costume? Wow, that’s a gracious gf (or a procrastinating prof, take your pick).
ps Ginjoint, thx for the FBOFW update. Alison, don’t ever do that to us, OK?
February 22nd, 2008 at 5:51 am
White socks? WHITE SOCKS????? Aaaaarrrggghhh, they are an abomination!!! Mind you, a Rocky Horror themed party is not exactly the place where you expect to find good taste …
Hope ya had a great time at the party! Am liking the girlf - she looks fun!
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:55 am
What kind of Brad fans are you people??
Not a single cry of “*ssh*le!!!”??
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
*throws rice*
The socks coudl be worse. Mr Gator was best man at a wedding once, and wore a rented grey suit. I stopped him just in time form wearing olive green socks with it.

Ever since LizGig has kindly provided us with a link to Talking Head’s “Once in a Lifetime” clip (cf comments to #522) I’ve alternately been time warped and nursing my own private midlife-crisis. But dear alls, I wonder, isn’t it — apart from painstakingly sewn fly and kummerbund and white socks — rather Alison in David Byrne drag we get to see here?
Go have a look for yourselves:

You look TOO awesome.
I am commenting to share a link which I am sure a million people will mail you. But apparently the homosexual agenda now involves geology:

February 22nd, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Is Alison’s girlfriend that plumber from a few episodes ago?
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:10 pm
OMG the Talking Heads video - wow that’s a flashback! MTV had only just come out, I was down in the “recreation room” in my family home, a zoned out high school senior I think.
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Lois may be too busy being the man to go dragkinging, but at least her mama is having a blast.
February 23rd, 2008 at 8:12 am
Oh Brad!
February 23rd, 2008 at 10:11 am
Yeah, ready2agitate, back when MTV still played music videos.
February 23rd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Ooooh cool!
February 23rd, 2008 at 6:05 pm
ITA, Cynthia-Symp, and lord help me I think that’s the first time I’ve ever wanted to drag-femme up, even in fantasy where my legs are as good as Tim Curry’s.
February 23rd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Wow Alison, I didn’t realize how much a STUD you were!!
February 24th, 2008 at 12:01 am
hey…is the photo of AB giving herself the sideburn doctored in anyway…i think something may have been painted over on the right side of image……hmmmm
February 24th, 2008 at 4:44 am
Translator interactions — AB, to what extent do you, or your publisher / agents, monitor what your translators are up to?
Detail / example: The English class with your father; not STOLZ UND VORURTEIL, “Pride and Prejudice”, on the cover of the book, but HOLZ UND VORURTEIL. Wood and prejudice? An echo of “Dummheit und Stolz / Wachsen am selben Holz”? Even as an hommage (femmage?) to the punning in D2WO4, it seems… misplaced.
So: How long a leash have you given them?

Hey Now -

Just wanted to share this good news. This story unfolded locally and the folks who made a documentary about it won an academy award for their film on Sunday!
February 26th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Thanks, Aunt Soozie.
Powerful.
February 26th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Aunt Soozie, I saw them win on TV - they were so happy! I love documentaries, and I’ll rent this when it comes out on DVD.
February 26th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Thanks Soozie—I’m looking forward to watching that one.
On another note; Don’t know if I’m going for Hilary or Barack yet, but thought this was pretty good—anyone else see this last Saturday?:

I loved the Tina Fey commentary.
This is a link to the blog of a friend of mine who is the real thing, an old school feminist supporting Hillary. (Despite the fact that Tina says it’s so passe!)
February 27th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Entirely off the subject, but you are all such a smart, informed group that I thought you might be able to help.
A friend just had a mastectomy and was told at Johns Hopkins that she doesn’t need radiation or chemo, but must take Tamoxifen for five years. She doesn’t want to do it, but Hopkins won’t follow her if she doesn’t. All her doctors are male and don’t like being argued with.
If anyone has experience or knows anyone who had slow-growing tumors and did not take the drug, please contact me directly. My email address is VirginiaHBurton(at)aol.com
Thank you for any help you can give.
February 27th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Bitch is the new black! Awesome. Shadocat, thanks for the tina fey link.
February 27th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Hey Virginia.
I’m gonna put a new post up imminently, and I think you should repeat your Tamoxifen question there. More people will see it than they will way down at the end of this one.
March 1st, 2008 at 6:59 am
Fabuloso outfits. You rock!
March 1st, 2008 at 1:12 pm
WOW!!! You make one hell of a Brad, Alison! Your girlfriend rocks!
