Also, if you happen to be in the environs of Stowe, VT, I’m reading at 7:30 tonight at the Stowe Free Library. Don’t you love the phrase “free library?” It makes me feel almost patriotic.

For those not in NE, “Free Library” is pretty
standard terminology, at least around small towns.
(Locally we have the Guilford Free Library,
at which my beloved is the assistant librarian.)
Although I believe my favorite is the sign
on the main drag in Marlborogh New Hampshire
that directs the reader to “The Frost Free Library”.

This isn’t limited to New England. There’s the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and the Urbana (IL) Free Library, just to name a few. (But I love the Frost Free Library!)

Great! A reading in DC! Now, is it Monday, June 25th, as listed under Appearances? Or is it Tuesday, June 26th, as in your message? Just double-checking, since I want so much to hear you read and hear what you have to say about Fun Home. I missed your reading at the Library of Congress 4 years ago, much to my dismay. Thanks!

as it happens, I spend a good chunk of my time loving and defending public libraries – I cannot imagine that our current polity would start up such institutions – so it means the world to keep them with us now – and the continued of existence of community libraries is no sure bet…but the kind of community conversation that arises when we talk about why we support them is powerful in ways that so little political talk has power these days…
I listened to Alision read/speak on the same bill with Diane DiMassa at New Words Bookstore back in the day…love New Words for keeping on keeping on after the bookstore went under.
I wonder, Alison – did you ever read at Crone’s Harvest in Jamaica Plain? You might know that Crone’s is long gone, but I bought the hardback version of Fun Home at a newer (6 years?) JP bookstore that I’m sure would be thrilled to host a reading…

Be advised – readings at Lambda DC mean you stand in the front of the store, right next to the plate glass window and too-warm sun and street noise, while everyone who showed up to hear you crowds in to stand among the (non-movable) bookcases or sits on the floor and commerce (incl. loud, loud cash register) continues. They will bring you a stool and water, but that’s it. May want to plan for a short presentation. Good luck.
