madding
July 27th, 2007 | Travels and Appearances
So I have one day of the San Diego Comic Con under my belt, almost. Here’s my cartoon breakfast.
That’s the animator Julia Tortolani on the left, me, Joan Hilty who works at DC Comics and also does the strip Bitter Girl, and Paige Braddock who does Jane’s World and also works for the Charles Schulz empire. Snoopy and Bugs Bunny treated us to our eggs.
Then I braved the convention center. Here are some random costume sightings. I like this one of Batman shopping for comics.
Just another day at Comic Con.
The Hulk.
This afternoon was my “spotlight” panel, just me talking about myself. I went last night to check out the room, and I was rather dismayed to see how huge it was. But check this out–there was actually a line for my thing.
And a very sizeable audience who asked all kinds of searching, thoughtful questions.
It was really cool. Now I have to go get ready for the Eisner Awards ceremony. The redoubtable Ellen Forney and I are going to present one together, and she has this idea that we should kiss onstage, à la Brittney and Madonna. I’m not so sure about this plan.

I just checked out her website and, uhm, I’d say go for the kiss Alison.
Batman checking out comic books…that’s a scream.
and the thoughtful sober facial expressions of the folks in costume as they consider various important comics things…oh, wait, who am I to talk about people in costumes…nevermind.

I like the buff gladiator-type-dude holding what appears to be a cell phone.

I didn’t know that Paige Braddock had connections to the Schultz estate. Does that mean she gets to say, “I work for Peanuts“?
Sorry about that. I actually do love Jane’s World. And Alison + Ellen Forney? “I’ll be in my bunk.”

looks like ellen forney was reading “tipping the velvet” and possibly also “the night watch” when the picture on her website was taken…

Alison, thanks for the intro to Ellen Forney. Wonderful work! I am thrilled about the collaboration with Sherman Alexie!

Uh, what would be the purpose of you and Ellen Forney kissing like Brittany and Madonna? It’s one this for straights to play lesbian, but for a lesbian it’s real life, not titillation. Or is this Ellen F’s way of saying you’re hot?
Hmmm, indeed.
Ellen

Yeah, I’m with Aunt Soozie; I’d go for the kiss, too. I’d love to snag a chance to snog with Ellen Forney!

Josiah, just want you to know somebody out here got the “I’ll be in my bunk” reference! Made me do a nice loud “hah!” startling the pesky cat off my lap. Thanks!

Oy vey, these pictures remind me of the mementoes I took back from “Wizard Con” in Chicago a couple of years back. Let’s see, there was the wild-eyed, white-haired woman in the Star Wars t-shirt frantically clawing through the longboxes, the girl dressed up as Nightcrawler who passed out (from excitement or from the fact that the blue make-up was clogging her pores, I’ll never know,) and of course, the two creepy dudes who asked to take my picture- not because I was dressed up as anybody, but because I was a girl. In a skirt. At a comic convention. Sigh. My SO insisted that we get pictures of them, too, so know these two extremely uncomfortable looking nerds are enshrined in my family photo album.

Not the first time Batman’s gone shopping for comics (per this cover from a 1969 story): http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=21685&zoom=4
:-)
Despite reading the things, I’ve never been to a major comic book convention; I’ve thought about going to the Wizard convention in Chicago, but not sure my comics tastes jibe with what I assume are those of that show’s attendees…

OOoooo go for the kiss. Paige is absolutely stunning…….sorry, just had to say that.

I appreciate the photos. I just wish my son was in one of them. It would be grand to get to see him.

Oh. My. God.
I’d never heard of Paige Braddock, but I’m about to get waaaaaay more familiar.
Mmmmmmm.

Anthony, what a wild Batman coincidence! Thanks for the link.

Hah! I totally went to college with one of the audience members in that last picture (or at least her doppelganger)! How cool!

Oh my god, I’m totally in the bottom pic! I feel all famous. Alison, your panel was one of my very favorites at Comic-Con; I’d already read and loved Fun Home so much, but hearing your take on the process of it was really fantastic.

Lordy! I’m in love with Paige Braddock. What a hottie!
I love the Hulk photo. What I now realize is an elbow, looks like the dark-haired person has place a knee on the table and is trying to climb over it.
Or maybe I’m wishing it was Paige Braddock and I’m the table.
By the way, AB, my girlfriend (may she never hear of my lust for Paige Braddock) gave my Fun Home for my birthday recently, and I read it cover to cover in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down! It was wonderful. Although some of the James Joyce references flew over my head, it was wonderful nontheless. I have told everyone about this book but I don’t do it justice.
I’ve been reading DTWOF for years, had all the books but lost them in my last lesbo-style divorce. Not to fear. I plan to by them all again soon and do my best to support your endeavors.
