Entertainment Weekly?!!

May 26th, 2006 | Uncategorized

There’s a review of Fun Home in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, along with a fancy photo which necessitated my flying to NYC a couple weeks ago. I blogged about the whole experience back on May 12, but EW didn’t want me to mention it before the issue came out so I took the post down…but now I’ll put it back up. I’ll indent it because I’m quoting myself.

So Entertainment Weekly is going to do a thing on Fun Home for their Books section. Entertainment Weekly??! Yeah, so they flew me to NYC for the day for a photo shoot. It was…um…rather a change of pace for me, shall we say. Here’s my publicist Holly meeting me at the photography studio. Holly my publicist
Here’s Freyda, the photo editor, and Phil the photographer. freyda and phil

Here I am with the hair person—there was also a makeup person and a wardrobe person, god help me. See that blue shirt? John Updike wore it at a shoot in Boston Wednesday night, and I wore it for a while yesterday. I can’t post any pictures of the actual set until after the article comes out, but they had some really cool ideas and it was very fun. It was like being in a kindergarten art class all day. But with hair and makeup.

I haven’t seen the magazine yet. If you should happen to, lemme know if I look terribly dorky.

For a horrible moment I thought that top photo was you, Alison, after EW’s “Queer Eye for the Gay Gal” makeover. Careful about letting them get their hands on you!

Rock on! Great review! Congratulations!!! I read the book in one sitting. It’s an incredible piece of writing and art.

Well, it’s about time you were recognised for your art and comic genius! I’ve been reading your stuff since University – I’m yet another one of your straight-girl fans. I wish you heaps of success with this one!

    Hi, Alison.

Thank you for “Fun Home.” I learned about it in TIME magazine on my way home from the airport. I bought TIME because the Dixie Chicks were on the cover and as I was flipping through it I found the notice of your book. I bought your book the same day and finished it the next day. WOW! Thank you. I’m headed to a Memorial Day picnic now and plan to let others know.

    Be well,
    Kimberlie Kranich
p.s. Do you remember the interview I did with you in my former home in State College for “The Purple Rabbit Show” on WPSU?

Not only is your book amazing, but your publicist is a total hottie. Lucky you!

I was going through my old DTWOF books the other day and found a handwritten letter Ms. Bechdel wrote me in response to my fan letter in 1992. That brought back good memories. I loved the review of the book and the photo in EW, despite the mag saying that DTWOF takes place in VT. (It’s nowhere and everywhere, EW!) I have been trying to get my friends to buy this book as well. Best of luck with this book and may it get many awards and accolades!

Just wanted to say that I had the privilege of proofreading Fun Home for Houghton Mifflin, and it’s the coolest project I’ve ever worked on. Everyone should go pick up a copy immediately. It’s hilarious and heartbreaking and completely wonderful!
