Check out this wild Dutch animator’s video! As someone who spends half my life drawing and half my life on the computer, I found it oddly, deeply satisfying. Here’s her website.

I tell ya’ll, if this doesn’t kick start your creative juices, you don’t have any.

  2. The Latent Lens says:

whadda ya mean no comments….This was incredible. and I was first unreal

  3. Tea says:

    that is awesome

    WOW!!!!!!!

  5. Ali says:

I now know why there are so many monosyllabic – well short – responses to the post – we are quite literally speechless!
Thank you AB for sharing what can only be described as a mind blowingly excellent animation.

  6. Acilius says:

    Extremely clever.

The three-stringed guitar playing the opening notes of “Seven Nation Army” reminded me of what four strings can do with the same tune:

The ending was brilliant too, really gave a twist to it.

  8. Ian says:

I think my favourite is probably the cheese on toast (wot, no bacon?), but the whole thing is so wonderful!

  9. freyakat says:

Superb! What’s imagined, what’s created, what’s physically real, what matters — it’s all the same and it’s all different!

Such imagination and humor and conciseness.

  10. Therry and St. Jerome says:

MY mind is boggled! AB, hope you’re as inspired as we are, hint hint. And yes, I expected bacon, but the artist is Dutch, and may not be as pig-obsessed as we are.

  11. Calico says:

That is cool. Kind of Escher-ish to me.
It also reminds me of the 80’s Ah-Ha video for the tune “Take on me”, which was pretty revolutionary at the time.

Oh, and Happy 40th Birthday Internet!

Total blog highjack, but I haven’t seen it mentioned here: there is a movie coming out– starring Sharon Gless–that is a lesbian love story. Check out screening times:

Sadly, I can’t make the November 4th show here in Minneapolis, but wanted to pass it on to a crowd who’d appreciate the news!

  13. Cathy says:

I also split my waking hours between the paintbrush and the keyboard, and I am so glad you posted this video.

  14. Francis says:

Wow!! This knocked my socks off!

  15. Pam I says:

@ Cathy, a fine example of how today’s youth give me so much hope for the future. Of course, even smarter guys would have used wipe-off pens.

  16. Acilius says:

“the artist is Dutch, and may not be as pig-obsessed as we are.” Good point. Probably cow-obsessed. You know those Dutch…

  17. Aunt Soozie says:

    fabulous… loved it.

  18. Andrew B says:

    That was fun. Thanks, Alison.

I bet a lot of hungry artists, or just artists who want to quit their day jobs, would like to learn that trick with the cheese and toast.

What a lot of frames! In the still image: the mirror, the sketch book in which it’s drawn, the drawn You Tube window, the sketch book in which it’s drawn (presumably the same physical sketch book), the real You Tube window, Alison’s blog page, our WWW browsers, the screens of our computers… and that could be complicated further. Alison puts a nice spin on the video by having it overseen by her drawing of herself, drawing herself.

I like how the artists drew the You Tube interface for us, instead of just presenting her animations within the real You Tube window. It feels more like we’ve been invited into her world than it would have if she’d just posted the four short videos alone.

Kind of interesting to think about animation versus virtual reality, and viewing versus participation (i.e. by posting our own videos to You Tube). This video makes gentle fun of the newer buzzwords.

  19. Anna in Albuquerque says:

A propos of nothing relevant, the other day I noticed I was missing Mo, Lois and Stewart and wondering what they were doing, as if they were friends in another city I hadn’t seen in a long time.

  20. Aunt Soozie says:

I wonder what JR’s wearing for Halloween this year? My daughter and two of her girlfriends are going out as fairies. The kind with wings.

  21. Ellen O. says:

Hey Anna [20]– I’ve had similar feelings, as if their lives are continuing and I’ve been out of touch. Wondering how Mo is doing in her new job, if Clarice has gotten a place of her own yet. Strange and bittersweet.

    Ellen

  22. Lea says:

    Just fantastic!

  23. Andrew B says:

Anna, Aunt S, Ellen, yes. Strange to be so imaginatively involved with a group of characters and have them just stop.

  24. freyakat says:

I’ll second that ‘yes’. The characters were such a part of my imaginative life for so many years
(since the beginning of DTWOF) that it seems weird and a bit unbelievable that they just disappeared.

  25. Marj says:

off-topic, but do we know how Maggie’s doing?

  26. Anonymous says:

Is it a wild video or a wild Dutch animator??

  27. Jain says:

They didn’t throw her out of the hospital yet today. Every day in seems like one day gained, but she still needs money.

  28. Ted says:

Here’s some shameless promotion. My Cousin, who among other things is a copy-editor for the SDGLN site, will be on the Stephanie Miller show on Air America this Monday. She will be discussing the Divorce Ban initiative here in California.

  29. Olivier says:

    What you all said!

  30. Teejay says:

Ali is right… this post left me speechless too! After a day of it percolating on my back burner and viewing it a couple of times, I came up with a couple of thoughts. First of all, it took me a while to get the toast and cheese animation… I thought the pieces of cheese were the slots of the toaster… and secondly, although I know this is sooooo nitpicky and such a fine point, but I wish that the clock in the taskbar advanced four minutes during the length of the clip 🙂 Still, this is innovative and awesome and I have sent it to everyone I know!

  31. Feminista says:

#28 & 29: Maggie’s at home, getting reacquainted with her beloved cat Dinah, and her sharp, incisive mind is working well.

  32. Aj says:

    Pretty sweet post!

  33. Calico says:

What I’m wondering is, who would want to eat toast and cheese with a fork and knife?
Pick the damn thing up, and mangia!

  34. Daña says:

    “a mind blowingly excellent animation.”

    Yeah. What Ali said.
