I loved Sarah’s book, Toward Amnesia, from its opening page. Her line, “We were often astonished in each other’s presence,” remains one of my favorite sentences of all time.
I have shared astonishment with friends and family over wood ducks, Harlequin ducks, green-winged teals, glowing mesas, and the Northern Lights. Shared astonishment is one of life’s most intimate pleasures.
Meanwhile, I need to track down Sarah’s latest work.
(And, on a less momentous note, here’s a link to a post on Bookslut.com’s blog that is filled w/kudos for AB. It’s an interview w/Jane Vandenburgh, who says, “Alison Bechdel’s is probably my favorite review of anything of mine ever, not only because the choice of her was completely inspired, but because she first so totally GOT my book, then wrote and drew something so eloquent.”
My two crabby old men cats were not so impressed, but Miss Agnes DeMitten (aka Endora) was checking behind the monitor. Which is pretty smart for a kitten, if you ask me.
Here’s a somewhat unexpected story in the fight for sexual liberation, from the electronic pages of MSNBC and the Associated Press: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30681720
A popular hispanic Roman Catholic priest in Miami has created a scandal in the church by being photographed hugging and kissing a woman. This contradicts the vow of celebacy, one of the three priestly vows (which also include obedience to Rome and a vow to live in poverty). The priest in question now admits that this was not an isolated incident, but that he has been romantically involved with the woman for ten years. As detailed in the attached news story, he has decided that his only course of action now is to leave both the priesthood and the Catholic Church so that he may marry his long-time partner. The vow of celebacy has been in effect for Catholic priests for 900 years.
“I kissed a girl, and I may do it again!” – Jill Sobule
Tell me he doesn’t have the best name… Rev. Alberto Cutie!
Someone thinks he’s a cutie. Love the “Padre Oprah” nickname too.
My guess is that since he was photographed smooching with his sweetheart in a bar and on the beach, he probably wasn’t exactly faithful to the other two priestly vows either (obedience to Rome and poverty).
Interesting that there were a bunch of folks gathered outside his parish offering support and forgiveness. Betcha they would have been calling for his head if the other person in the compromising photos was male.
Ksbel…mixed signals abound. God, this is one time I’m glad I’m older and have more therapy under my belt. In earlier days, this would’ve unraveled me. Not anymore.

Now that I’ve had a look at this photo, I’m wondering… Did you plan the photo in front of St. Vincent’s Hospital to honor Edna?
Hi Sarah!!!!
ooh! you were a block from my office.

Congrats again, Alison!
Yay! It’s Sarah! Ellen, check out BLUE, her most recent novel.
Whoohoo about the award, Alison!
that’s great – did you win?
@Sva
She did indeed win!
Congratulations, Alison!

Virago,
Yes, that A.B.! So eloquent, so intelligent! 🙂
On a totally unrelated note:
Hey, the Purina folks have posted a video of a talking cat!
http://video.yahoo.com/network/100000086?v=4877569&l=100000085
I put the “Talking Cat” video on speaker, and now Dinah is ransacking our apartment, looking for the intruder. Fun!
Oh, Maggie, brilliant! Mike The Cat darted in here to investigate (all paws stand by to repel boarders!) the moment the videokitty started to talk.
Would appreciate it if London Boy would read my response to his response in the Moosewood post. Right down the bottom, May 10th 5.16am.
@AustralianinLondon: Maybe he has and can’t think of anything to say? 😉
Hey, congrats, Bechdel!
And…my cat couldn’t care less about the video. Sheesh.
Mine ran to the window and looked out..they were sure that it WAS NOT in THEIR house
Happy Mother’s and Others’ Day to all!
