buttock champion of the world

April 26th, 2007 | Uncategorized

Ensie of Tacoma, WA, won the hiney contest. Here are her exceedingly correct and contextual answers:

1. Sydney – Sense and Sensuality (Hot, Throbbing Dykes to Watch Out For), about to do Mo with the “Cyborgasm”.
2. Stuart (Flow State – Post-Dykes to Watch Out For ) in bed with Sparrow, asking, “What’s Wrong?” and stressing over her previous female lovers.
3. Sydney (Polyamorous Perversity – Post-Dykes to Watch Out For) dressing quickly to get to the hospital with Mo when Harriet unexpectedly goes into labor.
4. Raffi – (Pajama Party – Hot Throbbing Dykes to Watch Out For) streaking away from a bath after lubing himself up while being babysat.
5. Mo (Buffed – Unnatural Dykes to Watch Out For) in the locker room, about to meet Deirdre’s Mom in the buff!

Thank you for playing, Ensie and everyone else. Oh, and Nichael! Thanks for the link to the Comics Journal cover. I hadn’t seen it yet. How very apropos.

Is there a way to send money for those who don’t do paypal?
A PO box for checks maybe?

I’m glad to see myguesses, such as they were, were all correct:

1 one of the Dykes wearin a strap-on something
    2 Stuart
3 one of the Dykes getting dressed or undressed
    4 Raffi avoiding a bath
5 Mo getting dressed or undressed.

I don’t knwo how I knew it was Mo.

While my anwsers are far from complete, none is totally mistaken.

  4. Al, et al. says:

Without looking them up, I was instantly four for five, including context. Methinks I need to get a life….

That cover was brillant. I don’t suppose Alison would consider throwing the reference shot for it into the next prize package?

  5. ensie says:

Thank you! I knew all of them but #3 – it took some quick searching through my books to find that particular set of cheeks.

  6. Aunt Soozie says:

    Oh My Gawd…
Who conceived and drew that cover!?
That is totally outrageous…and with the school bus going by and the hat with ear flaps and the boots…oh, my GAWD!
Also, Alison is built much better than that…just saying.

  7. Ginjoint says:

The boots. The school bus. Between those and Al et.al.’s reference shot comment, I’m dyin’ over here. In a good way.

  8. Feminista says:

Well,I got the person and context right for 1,2& 5,but was wrong for 2 & 3. Hooray for ensie (and your blog is *way cool*).

  9. Feminista says:

    Oops,that’s 3 and 4. Perimenopausal brain fog.

  10. ensie says:

    Thanks Feminista!

  11. DeLandDeLakes says:

Bwahahaha! I knew every one except for #3 (I thought it was Lois. Silly me. I shoulda recognized Sindey’s undies.)

    Looking forward to contest #2!

  12. sam says:

not much of a contest if you have all the books to look stuff up.

  13. JK says:

It would be a treat if you guys would post links to the 5 cartoons that the buttocks came from!

  14. Deb in Minnesota says:

Congrats to Ensie! Enjoyed the contest. 🙂

  15. Al, et al. says:

By the way, congratulations, Ensie! I’m not sure which I envy more– the cool stuff you won, or the fact that your now bear the title, “Buttock Champion of the World”! Plus, when Alison wins the Pulitzer, you can sell everything for a tidy sum on ebay!

  16. Emily in LA says:

#3 was definitely hardest- I thought it was a trick question kinda, I knew the last one was Mo about to run into Deirdre’s mom, and thought #3 was Mo too in something else…

    buttocks!

  17. Wondering says:

what’s happening with DTWOF? are they being “retired”?

  19. AK says:

Aunt Soozie – I believe AB herself did the cover…but in context of an article she did for Salon a few years ago. (You might still be able to find it out there in the ether.) The basic premise was “a week in the life of…” and the “lumberjack” drawing was one of several that went with the article.

  20. Yeah, thanks AK. You’re right. Except it was Slate, not Salon. I didn’t have time to do anything new for the CJ cover so I dug up the Slate thing from 1998 and colored it. The slender connection is, I was writing in the Slate piece about possibly beginning to write the graphic novel I’d been thinking about for years. And in retrospect, I find that the naked lumberjack image captures something about both the exposure and the sheer manual labor that writing Fun Home entailed.

  21. AK says:

Yup, the digital magazines run together in my brain. Seeing that drawing reminds me of Rachel Maddow talking about the pleasures of chopping your own firewood — backyard lumberjacking.

  22. louise says:

thank you for linking to that Slate piece. it is wonderful.

  23. Jaibe says:

In what is probably a hopeless last pitch for blog diversity, I’d like to point out the cover was linked to over on the live journal pages over ten days ago:

  24. --MC says:

Am looking forward to seeing if the Journal cover brings with it any controversy. I remember there was a bit of a stir a couple years back when James Sturm was interviewed, and did a cover of himself teaching a comics class in the nude. Then also, people who get upset about this sort of thing tend to go off most strongly when it’s full frontal male, and three-quarters closed female might not be as objectionable to them. (If memory functions, you might be the first female cartoonist, and the second one in all, to self-portrait in the buff on the Journal cover, Alison.)

  25. Deb says:

I love that cover and what perfect timing! Hey, I was too slow on the uptake, but I would have had them all correct as well!

  26. Aunt Soozie says:

    oh…I see…
well, maybe that’s what you looked like in 1998 Alison? You’re taller now?

The drawing has a kind of retro look or maybe a little R.Crumbishness or something…the figure’s shading and the stocky build and the “unprettiness” of your self portrait.

It’s interesting, the combination of a large vehicle passing by on the road while you’re chopping wood and the fact that it’s a bus full o’kids while you’re out there in the buff. Definitely resonates with Fun Home themes.

  27. mlk says:

love the story behind the cover art! thanks for sharing it w/us.
