Phranc in NYC

This is Phranc/The Cardboard Cobbler’s Coney Island Souvenir hat. It’s part of her New York Collection, which will be on display at the CUE Art Foundation, 511 W. 25th St. (between 10th and 11th aves) from December 6-January 28.
I’m going down to NYC next week for the opening. Come if you’re in town. It’s Thursday December 6, from 6-8. And Friday the 7th at 6:30, Phranc and Ann Magnuson will be performing.
Phranc is an inspiration–as an artist, as a musician, and as a dapper dyke about town. Nice change of pace. Phranc’s art is coming along well,and the You Tube videos are worth watching. The music-only video features the folk song M-A-R-T-I-N-A. (Not to be confused with G-L-O-R-I-A,which Carlos sang to Toni in the past.)
P.. AB’s video of her large drawings done last summer is excellent as well.
how big is that hat? i’m imagining huge, although i suppose it could be human head-sized.
As fascinating as Phranc’s art hat undoubtedly is, it seems everyone is fixated two threads back. No one can resist a discussion of race, class, and gender.
Well then I’ll speak up to say I adore Phranc. And I’d MUCH rather talk about her than race, class, or gender.
Speaking of cool girls, did you see the hilarious article in Real Change titled “Gettin’ Horny With Ellen Forney?” I about died laughing. I’m looking forward to her book, “Lust.” Great cover- even showing only spine it will totally upstage everything else on whatever shelf it’s on. It’s that hot.

I’m gonna go check that book out. I’m supposed to work Thursday night and frankly, I’m completely baffled and overwhelmed by NYC, but…I’ll be wishing I was there. If anyone wants to go and will lead me by the hand let me know. I can’t even cross the street there without a guide.

I looked at the amateur video and decided I was rather amused by paper flip flops etc. It’s in the same vein as Claes Oldenburg’s squashy plugs and drum kits, i.e. an illustration of how an artefact just becomes a joke if made in a different material/scale to that intended becuase the form is divorced from function and the form then becomes absurd..
There was a survey of Claes Oldenburg’s work at the Hayward Gallery in London in 1996 and previous to that in New York and Washington in 1995

I love phranc. I remember her performing at a club called Martina’s in Vauxhall, South London, and regailing us with her adventures swimming in Hampstead Ladies’ Pond and emerging with a moustache of grey scum. Her rendition of “I enjoy being a girl” is a mistresspiece of irony.

Aunt Soozie: Don’t be afraid of us New Yorkers and our wonderful and crazy and messy city. There’s a lot of spontaneity here and a lot of caring and joyous and aware human beings.
And Central Park is a special place in all seasons, not just wintertime. Come and see!
Girls? I just read episode 517 in Sonoma County Womens Voices, a fabulous publication to which I initially subscribed just so I could read DTWOF, in the pre-internet era, when it was no longer available here in Eugene. My loyalty through the years has this evening paid off big time. You’ll all enjoy it a bunch when it get here.
I get a kick out of Phranc’s work. I like how she takes cardboard to make ordinary objects. Its humble and witty and just wonderful to look at.

oh yes…it’s not quality but quantity that gets me.
Your city is inspiring, exciting, breathtaking and totally stunning.
And by stunning I mean… I’d be stunned…
completely absorbed with the people or the architecture,
distracted and out of touch with where I was supposed to be going…
staring at (or being pushed along with) a giant wave of people…
just like a tourist.
Being raised in a city I think I have street sense. I know it’s very wrong but I used to feel superior because I never had a problem, not even a car radio stolen. It could have been luck but I thought it was how I carried myself and being proactive.
I know my behavior on the street (the last time I was in NYC) was not only goofy but potentially dangerous.
