A Message from the Federated Sisterhood of Lesbian Comic Strip Characters, Local 428
Dear Members and Readers:
As you may be aware contract talks between us and Dykes To Watch Out For, Inc. are ongoing. The current negotiations are proceeding relatively well, but there have been some outstanding issues on which we would like to comment at this time:
Contrary to rumors in the press, nudity in the strip is not a contract issue at this time. Our membership remains divided over the exact role nudity has in the strip, with some calling the return of nudity as it has been used previously, and others preferring the current situation. As such the negotiation committee cannot bring itself to bring a position until a vote of the membership on the contract as a whole.
Our current demand for a gross portion of online sales is not irrational. Based on the growth of webcomics as field, we feel that sales of the strip are bound to increase, despite the failure of the PlanetOut deal. We are not demanding a portion of DTWOF, Inc.’s Paypal account at this time, due to the non-demanding nature of the account.
Due to DTWOF Inc.’s change in publishers to Houghton Mifflin with the upcoming book “The Essential Dykes To Watch Out For,” we feel that industry standard book residual rates should go into effect. At this point we feel we deserve what Dilbert gets on his books, 4.6% of gross sales. We would’ve demanded to go beyond these standard rates, as we see our sister unions fail to make any headway on this issue, but we feel that HM is inexperienced with comic sales, nor is it a member of the Alliance of Comic Publishers and Distributors.
We would like to remind our membership that a vote on the final contract is forthcoming, assuming a successful completion of negotiations. Check your mail for more information.
Signed,
Mo Testa
President
