Fun Home on NPR

I recently did a short interview about Fun Home with Liane Hansen for Weekend Edition, and it’s going to air on tomorrow morning’s show. It was originally supposed to run two Sundays ago, on Father’s Day, but it got bumped. I liked the Father’s Day connection, since the book is all about my dad. But tomorrow’s even better, because it happens to be the anniversary of his death. 26 years.

Here’s th’link.

Alison Beyond-Cool-Dyke! Looking forward to hearing this, and how poignantly apropos for this anniversary.

  2. Hah!
I’m afraid I ruined my chances at Terry Gross forever with the “David Beyondcoolguy” episode.

It never ceases to amaze me how the universe works. I will be up listening for the program. Hopefully it comes into Eugene. I only listen to NPR at home. My thoughts and healing energy will be sent your way tomorrow……..I understand the anniversary of the death of a parent. Take care.

  4. ES says:

If Terry’s really cool, let alone Beyond Cool, then hey, she should be all the more inclined to bring you on (almost said have you on, but then remembered the Brit readers) ~ ability to take a joke is way up on the certifiable media virtues list. Wait… so do you mean those WHYY folks are known DWTOF fans? Hmmm. Well yeeeahhh: if NPR has any kinda clipping service, their file on you would be simply bulging, true.

I’ve been reading your comic strip for years; I am glad to see you have a blog going as well.
Thank you for all that you do.

  6. Alex K says:

As a Brit reader, I now have to wonder if “bring you on” is a George Bush reference.

  7. Hollis says:

Am listening to your interview … amazing. Thanks.

  8. Squirl says:

I just finishing listening to your interview. Really great. What courage to write about your father. My father’s been gone for 16 years now and I still don’t talk too much about it.

I’ve been reading your comic for years and love it.

Please keep up the fantastic work!

Lovely job, Alison. Well articulated and genuine. Must say I liked LH’s questions — quite good. Also wondering how much the sound engineers messed around with your original answers (to shorten, take out pauses, etc.). I’m so proud of you and can’t wait to see you in the Midwest this week!!

P.S. Is this blog still on GMT? I posted at 9:14 am Central US.

I am the local host for the NPR Weekend Edition Sunday at WPSU and heard the interview this morning. An hour later, my partner called and said “her father was my English teacher.” I remembered my partner telling me the [very sad] story about your father (and heard it at least 5 or 6 times over the years), but was shocked to hear that you thought it was a suicide. Thanks for sharing your stories and thoughts (and drawings!).

  17. tania says:

your voice is really comforting. i felt it at the book reading and again just now. i think it has to do with those last days in vermont. so, thanks.

  18. Daisy Thompson says:

Magnificent! But didn’t Liane Hansen mispronounce your name?

  19. Jane R says:

Wow, you got NPR to say, “Dyke”!

  20. ES says:

Really, that was a great moment in National Public spoken word: Liane and that syllable.
