You are a good person, to brave such hostile elements to feed the birds.
I thought we were done with the snow, but we got swacked again last night/this morning with another wet, sloppy, approximately 6″ (so far – it hasn’t stopped yet). But when I look at your circumstances, I feel guilty for whining about it.
At least it’s not water. Poor Japan. The videos I’m seeing are horrifying.
Is this usual for this time of year? When does mud season start?
I’ll let AB reply if she has a chance, but while it’s typical for there to be snow on the ground this time of the year, this has been a particularly snowy winter in VT. Several cities around VT broke their all-time March one-day snowfall records during this recent storm.
Regarding mud season:
Down here in southern VT (AB live quite a bit farther north) we’ve missed the worst of the last couple of storms, but there’s still been quite a bit of snow. And despite the fact that we still have a couple of feet of snow covering the ground around our house, the roads say that mud season is already starting. The last few days have been well up into the 30s and raining. And, with all the expected snow-melt this year, mud season is expected to be, um, let’s just say, “unusual” this year.

Kate L#8: In point of fact there have been quite a number of roof collapses during the last couple of major storms in VT.
I don’t recall any houses, but at least one warehouse roof collapsed here in Brattleboro (all the workers were warned in time); and there was a week there about a month ago, when it seemed like the local paper was reporting an average of a barn roof collapse every day or so (not all of the cows were so lucky).
AB, your nose turns the most entrancing color pink when you’re out up to your whosis in snow. And no snow pants?
re: Mud season
Mud season is not unique to the US Northeast… there’s a great description of Montana mud season in Judy Blunt’s memoir, Breaking Clean. But those hardy Northeasterners get to enjoy black fly season right after mud season.
Further south here in NYC, it appears we are in monsoon season. Two inches (5.1cm) of wind-swept rain fell in about 12 hours last night. And that was after an equally-miserable rainstorm earlier in the week. Thank the deities for Gore-Tex.
