I recently did this interview on the literary site Beatrice.com with Jessica Abel. We talked about my memoir Fun Home and her recent graphic novel La Perdida.

in case you’re just aimlessly casting about for things to do in the utter leisure of your tour-break, I had a thought…

I would love to see any of your recommendations for graphic novels. I want to check out La Perdida now that I’ve seen Abel’s site, but in general, I tend to feel at a loss when wandering about the ever-expanding graphic novel sections of my local bookstores. If you ever wanted to put up a list of, say, several of your favorite artists/authors, I’d love to see it.

Personally, I’ve read Persepolis (I and II), Maus, and basically everything you’ve ever done, oh, and I like Lynda Barry and I’ve seen a few other artists I thought were cool…. but in general I’m a newbie.

What do you think of the Strangers in Paradise comic book series?

  3. Anon geek says:

Alison Bechdel, Persepolis, Maus, Lynda Barry… Emily, You have excellent taste!

Hi- We saw your site’s interest in Jessica Abel and thought you would be also interested in a great new documentary that kicks off the 19th season of the P.O.V. documentary series on PBS.

On Tuesday, July 11th, we are excited to present the national broadcast premiere of “Tintin and I,” a documentary by Anders Ostergaard that highlights the potent social and political underpinnings that give Tintin’s world such depth, and delves into the mind of Hergé, Tintin’s work-obsessed Belgian creator to reveal the creation and development of Tintin. “Tintin and I” will have its national broadcast premiere on Tuesday, July 11th.

We have produced a companion website
    http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2006/tintinandi/
    with:
    – A round-table discussion with comic artists Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware, Jessica Abel, Phoebe Gloeckner, Jason Lutes, and Seth.
    – A look at Tintin in America.
    – Thoughts from filmmaker Anders Ostergaard
    – Resources and links to other websites about cartooning and Tintin.

We hope that you will consider linking back to our site and promoting the P.O.V. broadcast of “Tintin and I” on Tuesday, July 11th at 10 PM (check local listings) on most PBS stations.

Thank you so much for your time and attention. If you have any questions, please consult our online pressroom (for photos and press releases, at http://www.pbs.org/pov/pressroom) and feel free to contact Ruiyan Xu at P.O.V. Interactive at xu@pov.org or 212-590-0580.

Wow. I found out about this way after the fact obviously, but this is awesome! I’ve been a fan of Bechdel’s work for awhile, and I just recently got into Jessica Abel. Interesting for sure.

Also, since it was mentioned, I feel the need to point out that Strangers in Paradise RULES.
