big day in VT

Governor Stoat vetoed the same sex marriage bill yesterday, as he promised to. This morning it gets sent back to the Senate for an override vote, which is expected to pass. Then it goes to the House, where NOBODY KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN! The House voted last week 94-52 in favor of the bill, but pro-same-sex marriage Republicans could vote NOT to override the veto. 100 votes are needed for an override.

I would just as soon be tied in a burlap sack and tossed off a bridge as married, but I’m gonna be pissed off if this all comes to naught. And ecstatic if it doesn’t.

moose, marriage, pocket history of sex

My pal Cathy Resmer who works for our local alt weekly Seven Days took some great videos yesterday morning at the Statehouse. 300 people descended on the Governor’s office to tell him how peeved they were with his announcement that he’s going to veto the same sex marriage bill pending in the legislature. Things are getting pretty exciting up here in the north woods.

This is me up in the middle of the night all haunted by Sarah Waters’ new book, The Little Stranger. I was fortunate enough to get an advance copy, and just finished. I can’t tell you ANYTHING about it or I’ll ruin it. But I will say this: READ IT. Then we can talk! It’s coming out at the end of April or early May.

I went on a lovely hike with Hol out in the woods yesterday. I was thinking about the idea of watersheds because I just read a poem by Gary Snyder called Watershed. He supposedly signs his emails with it because Read the rest of this entry »

out with the old

March 10th, 2009

My drafting table drawer has been growing increasingly crowded and dysfunctional, but I never have time to deal with it. This afternoon, however, I couldn’t take it any more. I started excavating, and realized that a lot of the stuff I’ve accumulated is actually obsolete. Like this little mirror.

ADD

March 8th, 2009

Whose idea was it to move daylight savings time up a month? Does this bother anyone besides me? Maybe it was announced somewhere, but since I’m in a news blackout, I missed it. I just seems wrong for it to be broad daylight out at 6:30pm in early March.

I saw The Reader last night, and am still feeling somewhat flayed. God.

Thanks to Steph for that great list of Read the rest of this entry »

Sorry I’ve been AWOL again. I finished my review for the NYT Book Review*. My excuse now is that I’ve gotten an iPhone.

road trips

February 26th, 2009

Thank you all so much for the magnificent digressions on the last post. Sorry I kinda disappeared. I’ve been working on a review for the New York Times Book Review–a graphic review of a regular book! I’m not sure when it’s coming out, but I’ll keep you posted. And I just took a short road trip to Colby College in Maine, about which I was compelled to create this little slide show for you.
