comix for gender pirates and sexual outlaws

October 2nd, 2007 | Uncategorized

That’s what you’ll find in Juicy Mother 2, edited by the illustrious Jen Camper. It just came out. It’s got all kinds of great stuff in it, including a jam comic by me, Jen, Joan Hilty, and Diane DiMassa, called “A Perfect Match.” We each did two panels, then passed it on to the next person, for four rounds. It took us  ten years to finish because each person would take forever to get their panels done. Jen, Joan and Diane all have other pieces in the book. There’s also a new piece by Howard Cruse. And a really great one by one of my favorite cartoonists Michael Fahy, of Boy Trouble fame.

Alison…you’re so prolific lately! Nice to see you back on the blog more often.

  2. Josiah says:

Cool beans! I’ve ordered it, and also put in an order for the original Juicy Mother, which I somehow missed when it came out. Some great creators in both volumes!

  3. Ginjoint says:

Now I know what my next order is from Women & Kids. BTW, I did read Different Daughters: A History of the Daughters of Bilitis. Thanks for the recommendation.

I got it last week. I found the comic jam, walked into my wife’s office and said, “THIS is a dyke comic wet dream.” She stared at the names at the top of the page and agreed. We read it together. And then I had to go back and reread it a couple of times.

    Thanks so much!

PS: Gave _Fun Home_ to a good friend as a birthday gift this past weekend. She stayed up half the night reading because she couldn’t put it down. She admired how it made her own extremely messed-up family look… well, not NORMAL precisely, but at least publishable. 🙂

I also note that seeing Joan Hilty’s solo contribution to the collection made me want to have a hot drunken fangirl one night stand with her. If, in fact, I could manage to do more than mumble, “Thank you,” for an autograph. Heh.

  6. DeLandDeLakes says:

Ten years!?!?!? I feel faint. It was a great jam tho, tres bizarre.
I totally agree about Joan Hilty’s solo comic in JM2, although I thought the sudden fascination with gays in Mormon county in that book was slightly odd.

  7. Ian says:

I don’t know DeLand, maybe it’s different in the States, but everytime I see a young, handsome, suited Latter Day Saints missionary wandering around town, it sets off my gaydar. Every time!

In fact, we seem to be missionary central at the moment. I didn’t realise Liverpool was wallowing in that much sin it desperately needed saving. We had a bright yellow scientology tent in one of the town squares. What I particularly liked was that it only mentioned healing back pain on the outside of the tent. It was only when you looked in you saw the word ‘scientology’ and those stress testing machines.

I think my Grandad had the best remark with which to evoke a horrified response from the missionary of the day. He was in the Palestine police force before WWII and always used to tell them how he’d “raided the best brothels on the Via Dolorosa”. It never failed, ever.

If you’re in NYC, there is a release party for the new book next weekend at Bluestockings on the Lower East Side. More info below:

    Saturday, October 13th @ 7PM – Free

Yup, it’s time for the release, slideshow and signing for “Juicy Mother 2,” an anthology of comix for gender pirates and sexual outlaws. Serving up killer dykes chasing romance, a superhero tranny, homeboys in love, kids with queer parents, sweet sex, rough sex, confusing sex, and goldfish, “Juicy Mother 2” features 31 artists. Come and meet these incredible talents including: Jennifer Camper (Rude Girls & Dangerous Women), Diane DiMassa (Hothead Paisan), Ivan Velez, Jr. (Tales of the Closet), Joan Hilty (Bitter Girl), Victor Hodge (Black Gay Boy Fantasy), David Hooper (What Choice Do I Have?), Fly (PEOPs), and Michael Fahy (Boy Trouble).

  9. Josiah says:

Re: Mormon missionaries who set off one’s gaydar — My bi-dyke ex-girlfriend once said, “I sometimes see these clean-cut guys and I’m not sure if they’re gay, or just Christian.” There’s a definite stylistic overlap.

  10. Riotllama says:

  11. Natkat says:

Wow, I bought a book by Jennifer Camper years ago. I really like her stuff.

Got #1 and #2 last week-end at Bluestockings (NY), both issues are great!
Loved your “Oppressed Minority Cartoonist” in #1, Alison. 🙂

  13. M.Fahy says:

    Thanks, AB!
It’s nice to get a compliment, but it’s even nicer-er coming from someone one admires.
Maybe one day our paths will cross and we’ll get to discuss nibs or something.
(I probably don’t need to add here that “Fun Home” is just awe-inspiring…)
