Broad Vocabulary, Milwaukee WI
July 9th, 2006 | Uncategorized
Today I read at Broad Vocabulary, a new feminist bookstore that’s owned and run by a stalwart band of young volunteers. I love their mudflap logo. Here’s Molly out front.
And here’s me with Molly and Amy, inside.
We had a cozy, convivial sort of reading. Here’s the crowd looking at my powerpoint slides. It was a great bunch of young people, old time DTWOF readers, boys, girls, comics geeks, the whole gamut.

We had been on vacation in Madison the day before and I saw Alison there. My girlfriend was sick and couldn’t go and she was very disappointed. When we got back to Milwaukee, we were so happy to see that she was going to be at our local bookstore that day.
We are all long time “Dykes To Watch Out For” fans probably going back to the very first comics.
It is hard to describe just how much this comic strip has been there, present in various papers through our personal journeys of coming out, relationships beginning and ending, all of the political happenings and more. Whenever we would pick up a paper, of course, the first thing we would look for is those wacky dykes. The strips were always thought provoking and also made us laugh.
It was such a privilege to finally meet Alison after all of these years. “Fun Home” gives us a little more insight into the creator of the characters.
We were pleased to see that Alison is a thoughtful and most gracious person. Thank you so much for coming to our city even though it may have not been very profitable financially.
I like that bookstore! Living in Pittsburgh offers us NONE of these kinds of things. The last gay/lesbian/feminist thinking bookstore went extinct a few years go. It’s tough being an alternative thinker in a yinzer steel town. I’m originally from Maine and seeing Alison tripping to all of these great places makes me yearn for New England.
Oh – and I like the reflection of you in the store window!
I love their signage…it’s great…and the homebaked quality is an interesting contrast with that logo.
Keep up the good work. Come down to Texas some time.
Man, I knew that place had to be on Kinnickinnic! Awesome!
I got the same tramadol attack… well, not the same, because it was only about 20 comments instead of 90, and i t have any filtering set up, and I just deleted them one at a time… hmm.. the only thing really in common was that it was about tramadol… what filter do you have set up that caught them all?
